What Is a Brow Lift?

A brow lift, also known as a forehead lift, is a cosmetic surgery that raises low-hanging eyebrows. During this procedure, an incision is made within the hairline or temples to elevate the skin and reposition the underlying tissues. The brow lift aims to smooth forehead wrinkles and raise sagging brows to a more alert, youthful position above the eyes. This surgery provides excellent results that last up to 10 years, sometimes even more.

Types of Brow Lift

Coronal Brow Lift
The coronal brow lift is the most traditional technique for raising the eyebrows and smoothing forehead wrinkles. During this procedure, the surgeon makes an incision across the top of the head from ear to ear. The forehead skin is lifted, and excess tissue is removed to elevate the eyebrows to a more youthful position.
The endoscopic brow lift is a less invasive technique that uses a small camera (called an endoscope) inserted through several tiny incisions (3/4 of an inch each) in the scalp. This allows Dr. Sanchez-Navarro to see under the skin and reposition the forehead tissue without long cuts. A tiny surgical instrument is also inserted through the other incision to pull the muscles, suture them higher, and make the brows look more open and youthful.
The temporal brow lift focuses on the outer sections of the eyebrows. Incisions are made in the hairline of the temples, providing access to tighten the underlying muscles and tissues. This procedure lifts the brow’s tail for a subtle, natural enhancement of the eyes and forehead.
The direct brow lift is the simplest technique that may leave significant scarring. An incision is made right above the brow, allowing the surgeon to remove excess skin. The brow is then lifted vertically to create an arched shape. This technique is used only for patients with deep lines in the forehead that can blend with the scar above the brows.

Consultation & Preparation for Brow Lift

Before a brow lift, patients must schedule a consultation with Dr. Sanchez-Navarro to discuss their goals and desired results. The surgeon evaluates each individual’s facial features and bone structure to determine if they are eligible for this operation. Dr. Sanchez-Navarro also explains the various techniques, such as endoscopic and temporal brow lifts, and helps select the best option. He always considers the patient’s medical history and advises them on any health conditions that must be optimized before surgery.
It is recommended to stop smoking and avoid certain medications and supplements that can increase bleeding and swelling. The patient may also be asked to get pre-operative lab testing done. After all these preparations, we can proceed to the surgery.

Brow Lift Procedure

Markings

Before the procedure, Dr. Sanchez-Navarro marks the surgical sites on the forehead and brows using a special marker. These signs guide the doctor during the operation. The markings indicate where the incisions will be made and how the underlying tissue will be repositioned.
Brow lifts are performed in our state-accredited surgical center under general anesthesia. This means that the patient is fully asleep during the procedure. Our board-certified anesthesiologist provides intravenous medications to induce a state of controlled unconsciousness before the surgery begins. General anesthesia ensures that the patient feels no pain or discomfort.
Dr. Sanchez-Navarro may use different incision techniques during a brow lift, depending on the desired corrections and the patient’s hairline position. Here are the most common options:
  • Classic incision: One extended cut along the hairline, starting from one ear to the other.
  • Endoscopic incision: Tiny incisions made behind the hairline through which an endoscope and surgical tools are inserted.
  • Temporal incision: Short cuts in the temples behind the hairline.
Once the incisions are made, Dr. Sanchez-Navarro lifts the forehead skin and reshapes the muscles beneath to smooth wrinkles and raise the brows. Excess tissues may be removed. Each sagging brow is sculpted into a desirable, arched shape.
When the lifting and reshaping are complete, Dr. Sanchez-Navarro closes the incisions with sutures or surgical staples. The treatment sites are covered with dressings.

Add-On Procedures

CO2 laser resurfacing is a treatment that uses a carbon dioxide laser to remove damaged outer layers from the skin. It can be added to a brow lift to reduce wrinkles, age spots, acne scars, and other skin irregularities for a smoother, tighter, and younger-looking appearance. The laser allows for more precise control over the depth of resurfacing compared to chemical peels.

Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that removes excess skin, muscle, and fat from the lower and/or upper eyelids. It can be performed with a brow lift to enhance the rejuvenated appearance of the face. Blepharoplasty is the best way to address signs of aging around the eyes.

Brow Lift Recovery

First 24 Hours

Immediately after brow lift surgery, the area around the eyes is usually bruised, swollen, and tender. Pain medication is prescribed to help manage discomfort. Cold compresses may also be applied to reduce swelling. Patients are advised to keep their heads elevated on several pillows when resting. Strenuous activity should be avoided.
Inflammation and bruising around the eyes and forehead start subsiding in the first week after surgery. Discomfort and tightness also decrease. Stitches are removed within 7-10 days during a follow-up appointment with Dr. Sanchez-Navarro. Patients can usually return to non-strenuous work after a week of recovery.
During this period, swelling decreases dramatically. Patients typically feel much better and return to their regular routines. Bruising may still be visible but continues to fade. Any signs of infection around the incisions should be reported to the surgeon.
Recovery is usually finished 1-2 months after the brow lift procedures. Most patients are healed enough to resume all regular activities. Any residual swelling and bruising are minimal. Patients are advised to avoid exposure to direct sun until the remaining symptoms have entirely resolved. Final brow lift results become visible after two months as swelling dissipates.

Candidates for Brow Lift Surgery

Ideal Candidates

Ideal candidates for a brow lift procedure are men and women with sagging or low eyebrows that give their faces a tired, sad, or angry appearance. Such patients often have deep forehead wrinkles or frown lines between the eyebrows. Ideal candidates are in good physical and mental health, with no severe conditions that may impair healing or increase anesthesia risks. They also have realistic expectations of the results that can be achieved.

Eligible Candidates
Candidates with mild to moderate sagging or asymmetry of the eyebrows may benefit from a surgical brow lift. The procedure can provide subtle improvements for some patients who want to smooth out low or uneven brows. However, dramatic changes are not likely for those with only minor sagging.
Candidates Who May Not Be Eligible
Patients with very high or arched eyebrows are typically not good candidates for a brow lift. Certain medical conditions, like uncontrolled diabetes, bleeding disorders, or nerve damage, may also make people ineligible.

Benefits of a Forehead Lift

Improved Appearance
A brow lift can smooth deep forehead wrinkles and lift sagging eyebrows. As a result, the upper eyelids may appear less droopy. A brow lift creates a more refreshed, youthful, and alert appearance.
Widened Field of Vision
As people age, their brows can sag down over the eyes, obstructing peripheral vision. Our cosmetic surgery elevates the eyebrows and forehead skin, opening the field of view. This may benefit many brow lift patients, especially if obstructed vision affects their quality of life.
Reduced Signs of Fatigue
Drooping brows can make a person appear tired, angry, or sad even when they are not. A brow lift addresses this problem, creating a more bright-eyed, well-rested look. New facial contours may positively impact how others perceive your mood and energy levels.
Long-Lasting Results
Unlike injectable treatments, a surgical brow lift can produce results that last for years. Dr. Sanchez-Navarro uses the latest technology to create a natural appearance without an “overly pulled” look. Results are permanent, although some settling may occur over time. Our plastic surgery practice offers the most advanced brow lift techniques for natural-looking facial rejuvenation.
