What Is a Thigh Lift?

A thigh lift, or thighplasty, is a surgical procedure to reshape the thighs by removing excess skin and tightening underlying tissues. During this lower body lift procedure, Dr. Sanchez-Navarro removes loose skin from the thighs. Then, he tightens the remaining tissues for a more even and toned look. The aim is to improve the shape of the thighs so they appear slimmer and better-proportioned with the body overall. Many patients opt for this surgery after losing a lot of weight, getting older,
or if excess skin makes them feel uncomfortable or affects their confidence.
The operation usually requires incisions near the groin, inner thigh, or outer thigh area. Their specific placement and number depend on how much skin removal
is needed and whether it is done on one or both legs. Dr. Sanchez-Navarro takes special care when making incisions so that they result in minimal scarring.
The goal is always for patients to look as though they were never operated on, instead appearing naturally refined with their body’s beauty.

Thigh Lift Techniques

We have several options for thigh lift surgery. The methods differ in where incisions are made, how much skin and fat they remove, and which parts of the thigh they treat:

Mini Thigh Lift

A mini thigh lift is perfect if a patient only requires slight adjustments, mainly to the top section of their inner thighs. During this type of surgery, our expert makes tiny cuts and uses liposuction to remove small pockets of excess fat. Then, he took away any loose skin using a scalpel for a smoother, more toned look in that part of the leg. This technique is best suited to people whose skin has mild laxity (sagginess). Because it involves less cutting than other methods, there will be minimal scarring afterward and also less downtime required for recovery.
The inner thigh lift is sometimes called a medial thigh lift. It is an option for patients who have too much fat or skin along their inner thighs, extending from the groin to the inside of the knee. Our surgeon performs this procedure by making an incision in a patient’s upper thigh. Then, he removes any excess fat or skin before pulling everything tight again. This leaves their inner thighs looking slimmer and more toned. This technique is perfect for patients who have experienced considerable weight loss.
A bilateral thigh lift, also known as an outer thigh lift, is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to remove excess skin and fat from the buttocks, outer thighs, and waist area. This technique is considered the best way to reshape and sculpt these areas specifically. During surgery, an incision is made all the way around the waist. Once the loose skin has been pulled downward (and any necessary fat removal has taken place), it can be redraped before sutures are applied. This approach is particularly useful for patients who have both surplus skin and fatty tissue on their outer thighs.
A spiral thigh lift is a full-thigh treatment that covers every part of a patient’s thighs: front, back, and outside. In fact, it is the only method that can give an all-around (360-degree) improvement. This surgery involves two cuts. One is made from a patient’s groin down to their knee (like an inner thigh lift). Another is going around their waist just above the hip bone. Sometimes, surgeons call it a belt lipectomy with vertical medial thighplasty. This method eliminates a lot of extra skin and fat, making the thighs much sharper and giving the buttocks a curvier appearance.
For those patient who want to remove a lot of skin and fat from their inner groin area all the way down to their knees, one option to consider is vertical thigh lift surgery. Our surgeon makes an incision shaped like a crescent moon that goes from an inner groin area to just inside a knee. Next, he pulls a patient’s skin tight and takes out any extra fat. This method works well for those who have a lot of sagging skin because it lifts more skin than a mini thigh lift, or an inner thigh lifts alone.
A posterior thigh lift procedure is performed to remove excess fat and tighten skin from the back of the legs. The aim is to reduce sagging skin and cellulite in this area. Incisions can be placed anywhere depending on how much correction is needed and the individual patient’s anatomy. Our surgeon makes them carefully, so that resulting scars are as inconspicuous as possible. Still, they can provide access for repositioning tissue and removing excess fat if necessary.

Thigh Lift Surgery Explained

At the initial meeting, Dr. Sanchez-Navarro conducts a careful examination to decide which thigh lift method is best. The surgeon discusses the patient’s worries and goals, describes available techniques, and checks skin quality, as well as how much extra fat there might be. What is more, he takes photos to document the current condition and compares it with the post-surgery results. He also provides a detailed cost estimate for the procedure. A complete medical assessment is carried out to guarantee the patient’s safety.
  • Marking and Anesthesia: On the day of surgery, Dr. Sanchez-Navarro starts by marking where incisions will go based on which thigh lift technique they’ve selected. Then, an anesthesiologist gives the patient general anesthesia so they’ll be unconscious and pain-free during the procedure.
  • Incisions and Contouring: Next, incisions are made as per the chosen procedure. Mini thigh lifts involve small cuts in the groin area. More extensive ones like vertical or spiral thigh lifts may necessitate incisions from the groin to the knee (or around the hip) instead. Excess fat or skin is taken out, underlying tissues are tightened, and the thighs are sculpted for a smoother, firmer look. Dr Sanchez-Navarro performs all these steps with great precision.
  • Closing the Incisions: Once Dr. Sanchez-Navarro has achieved the desired contour, he carefully closes the incisions using sutures. This way, any scarring will be as inconspicuous as possible. Depending on how much lifting is done and how many areas are treated, the whole surgery usually takes between two and four hours.

Recovery After a thigh lift banner

Recovery After a Thigh Lift

Immediate Recovery

Patients who have undergone thigh lift surgery are taken to a recovery area
in our state-accredited surgical center. Here, they can wake up under close supervision from the effects of general anesthetic. During this time, our experts can provide whatever pain relief and assistance they need to reduce swelling. Still, it is expected to feel some discomfort around the thighs during these early days after having surgery.
For the initial 3-4 weeks after thigh lift surgery, we encourage our patients to wear compression clothing that offers a light level of support for their thighs. These garments can make a real difference in recovery by reducing swelling, aiding healing, and improving results overall. It is important not to do anything too demanding during this time. Patients should avoid heavy lifting or vigorous exercise until our surgeon has cleared them to do so. They normally have a check-up appointment within the first week. This way, our medical staff can make sure everything is healing as it should be. Although sutures are likely to be removed between 10 and 14 days post-surgery, we advise avoiding sports and intense physical activities for a few more weeks.
The complete recovery from a thigh lift surgery may require a few months. The body may need some time to get used to the procedure and heal itself. So, patients can expect swelling for up to four months post-op. However, over this period, they should also notice their thighs looking progressively better: with excess skin gone, legs ought to appear smoother and more toned look overall. To ensure the best healing process, it is important that patients closely adhere to any post-operative instructions provided by our surgeon. It is also necessary to make and keep all follow-up appointments so that the healing process can be monitored.
